Falstaff (in concert)

Verdi‛s Falstaff – entirely without set or costume, but with drama. During our performance, the Staatsorchester Stuttgart’s musicians are placed on the stage, the singers act it out in front of it. The audience therefore gets the opportunity to concentrate fully on the musical performance, conducted by Cornelius Meister.

Giuseppe Verdi’s librettist Arrigo Boito once described Falstaff as Shakespeare’s Mephisto, when in 1893, they both chose that aged debaucher as their last opera’s title character. However, it is not the soul of a learned man or wagers with God that Falstaff is after. No, he is interested solely in more tangible goals: wine, married women and money and for that, he cheats for all it is worth. Although with moderate success only. And not until having been thrown out of the window at least once, comes Falstaff to realize that he was led by the nose. In the end, the only couple blessed with happiness are Nannetta and Fenton.

No other opera Verdi’s thrives as much on the joint process of playing music as that particular commedia lirica – during the pandemic therefore, it is the perfect piece of music for our ensemble and guest singers to make a fresh start!
