Le nozze di Figaro

The Marriage of Figaro

by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Opera buffa in four acts
Libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte
in Italian with English and German surtitles
The character Cherubino in Mozart and Da Ponte’s opera buffa is one of the most dazzling characters in the world of opera. In Le nozze di Figaro it is not only Cherubino who is no longer aware of who he is and what he is supposed to do – all characters are affected likewise and find themselves in an acknowledged state of being or – more precisely – an acknowledged state of being beside themselves. For the moment that is. If Susanna and Figaro at the end of their long wedding day can still look back and describe it as a happy event is uncertain as throughout the day the celebrations were repeatedly in danger of being called off altogether due to various confusions and conclusions. In her production director Christiane Pohle focuses on the normative promise of happiness for the romantic two-person relationship whilst searching for the unrealistic potential of love – in any form.
