Mefistofele

by Arrigo Boito
Opera in one prologue, four acts and an epilogue
Libretto by the composer after Johann Wolfgang
von Goethes Faust I und II
in Italian with German subtitles
At the beginning, there was a wager. Then the wager became a pact and Faust the wager’s stake. But when is a pact dissolved, a wager lost? »Arrestati, sei bello!« Time, stand still! It is not in the flush of ecstasy when Faust utters these words, but when celestial forces swoop down announcing his death. Lack of time as an attitude of life and a riddle we do not question as much as we should. Therefore, Faust can be regarded as the man of the hour. Back again or still at it – the future could catch up with us from behind.
