2. Chamber Music Concert

Light and Shadow

Louis Spohr String Sextet C-Major op. 140
Richard Strauss / Franz Hasenöhrl Till Eulenspiegel einmal anders!
Richard Strauss Rosenkavalier-Overture for Chamber Ensemble
Ludwig Thuille Sextet B-Major op. 6 for Wind Quintet and Piano

The ray of light that music history casts on individual composers arises from the present that is writing the story. Whether a composer stands in the light or in the shadow of the music world is subject to the change of time, as in the case of Louis Spohr. He was not only a respected conductor and, alongside Niccolò Paganini, one of the greatest violin virtuosos of his time, but also a highly valued composer. After his death, however, the versatile artist gradually fell into oblivion. Ludwig Thuille also enjoyed an acclaimed reputation during his lifetime, especially as a music teacher and a central figure in the “Munich School”. As a composer he is now in the shadow of his contemporaries, Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss. The latter, on the other hand, with whom Thuille had a long friendship, has a regular place in the opera and concert repertoire to this day. Both worlds meet in this concert, with which Cornelius Meister and members of Staatsorchester Stuttgart not only present rarities in music history, but also let Richard Strauss' successful works "Till Eulenspiegel" and "Der Rosenkavalier" shine in a new, chamber music light.
