A string quintet by Josef Mysliveček that is “classical” in a double sense opens the concert with different quintet constellations by Czech composers. Pavel Haas, one of Leoš Janáček's most talented students, is the first to combine four strings with a set of drums, which creates extraordinary timbres in the last movement. He was inspired by a summer stay in the Monkey Mountains near Brno in 1925: “Whether it's the rhythm of the vast landscape or the birdsong, the irregular movement of a horse-drawn cart in the country, the warm song of the human heart or the quiet, cool flow of the rays of the moon, the exuberant mood of a wakeful and swarmed night or the pure, innocent smile of the morning sun ... there is always movement here that dominates everything. ” That the drums and elements of jazz are used
in the last movement was the logical next step for Haas. Ultimately, only the violin and cello remain, which Zdeněk Fibich engages in a lively conversation with the clarinet, horn and piano in his late romantic quintet from 1893, which occasionally invites you to dream.
