6. Symphony Concert

Duncan Ward / Alina Pogostkina

Lisa Streich Segel, Alban Berg, Alexander von Zemlinsky
Lisa Streich Segel (German premiere)
Alban Berg Violin Concerto "In Memory of an Angel"
Alexander von Zemlinsky The Mermaid

Filigree sounds and strong outbursts characterize Lisa Streich's work "Segel", which will have its German premiere with Staatsorchester Stuttgart under the direction of Duncan Ward. The young Swedish composer, who is the Composer-in-Focus of the 21/22 season, writes works with a fascinating pull that seem to shift effortlessly between the here and the otherworld. The earthly and the transcendent also meet in Alban Berg's Violin Concerto, which is dedicated to Alma Mahler's daughter, who died early, and to the architect Walter Gropius. As if in a symphonic poem, Berg depicts the girl's cheerful character and the agony of death until the solo violin finally floats into heavenly spheres. Alexander von Zemlinsky's orchestral fantasy “The Mermaid” also fades away with a mysterious float. Zemlinsky brings the unhappy love of Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale figure and her transformation into an air spirit to life with the dazzling, intoxicating sound language of the fin-de-siècle. Did he set his own pain to music in the passionate work? Shortly before that, his beloved Alma had become engaged to Gustav Mahler and thus brought Zemlinsky's hopes to an abrupt end.
