Lashing waves and thunderous winds can be heard in Antonio Vivaldi's flute concerto “La Tempesta di Mare”, which describes a storm on the high seas with sound painting effects. In the concerto “La Notte”, on the other hand, eerie sounds conjure up a nocturnal haunted story in which ghosts wreak havoc. It is not the flute but the bassoon that is at the center of Philipp Friedrich Böddecker's brilliant sonata from 1651 on the folksong “La Monica”, “The Nun”, which was very popular at the time. His work is closely related to Stuttgart, where he held the position of organist at the collegiate church. Georg Philipp Telemann, who mainly worked in Hamburg, was the only German composer of his time to receive an invitation to Paris in 1737, where he was able to celebrate his international breakthrough. Open to everything new, he was inspired by the French baroque style. This also shines through in Camille Saint-Saëns' septet, in which the grand master of French romanticism connects the past and the present with a wink.
