Alcina

by Georg Friedrich Handel
Dramma per musica in three acts
Libretto based on motives from Ludovico Ariosto's Orlando furioso
in Italian
Ruggiereo has given up his military career and has left his fiancée Bradamante to be with Alcina, a sorceress under whose spell he has fallen. They live their socially inacceptable love affair on Alcina’s island. But Bradamante, who plans to win back Ruggiereo, and Melisso, who needs Ruggiero to win the war, are both close on their heels.

Handel composed his opera Alcina which first premiered in London in 1735 in his mature years.
