In the Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, sung by ensemble member Paweł Konik, Gustav Mahler portrays a lyrical first-person perspective trying to come to terms with unhappy love. At the time of its composition Mahler himself was unhappily in love with the singer Johanna Richter. The poems written for her in the song cycle reflect Mahler's own farewell. Krzysztof Penderecki entitled the last movement of his 1993 quartet as a farewell. It starts off with a melancholic nocturne, which also creates the link towards Nachtgesang taken from Max Bruch's Acht Stücken. Composed in 1910 and inspired by Robert Schumann’s Romances, the cycle appears like a wistful look back towards a bygone era. Schumann on the other hand established a new genre with his Piano Quintet, which was described by his wife Clara as "extremely brilliant and effective".
