Werther loves Charlotte. She, however, feels bound by a pledge to her late mother to marry Albert. Nowadays, that is not regarded as an obstacle any longer or maybe merely as the reason for an affair or the end of the engagement. In the world of literature and opera, however, Werther is still not prevented from hurling himself whole-heartedly into that apparent one-sided amour fou – despite Charlotte marrying Albert. Right up to the end, Werther hopes that Charlotte and himself could still come together. When he finally realizes the situation’s futility, he commits suicide. And Charlotte’s final confession of her love to Werther only becomes possible at the sight of Werther dying
