Breath one’s last
A spiritual approach to the opera “Dialogues des Carmélites”
How can I come to terms with my own mortality? In Francis Poulenc’s opera Dialogues des Carmélites, we accompany the sisters of a Carmelite order in their struggle for self-determination, which ultimately leads to their collective martyrdom. The women are united by their willingness to die for their faith, but they must each face death in their own personal way. Fears and doubts stand alongside feelings of lightness and hope for salvation. Confronting death as part of life: this is the theme we want to address this evening and make our own. In addition to chamber music by Francis Poulenc and insights into the opera, there will be a meditation and a communal ritual – because in the face of the unimaginability of the end, words and knowledge cease.
