Achim Freyer's now legendary scandalous production from 1980 exposes the nightmarish quality that so often hides beneath the trivialized folkloric - then as now.

A story of growing up and love: Tamino is commissioned by the Queen of the Night to rescue her daughter Pamina, who is being held captive by Sarastro. Involuntarily, the bird-catcher Papageno is sent on Tamino's journey. After numerous trials, Tamino and Pamina find their place in the world - as adults and as lovers.
