Risa Matsushima

Tokyo-born soprano Risa Matsushima completed a master's degree (opera) at the MUK Vienna and a master's degree (new music) at the HfMT Cologne. She made her debut in 2021 at the Vienna Philharmonic Summer Academy as Donna Anna in “Don Giovanni,” which was broadcast on ORF and won the 2022 Austrian Music Theater Award for Best Young Production. In 2022, she sang the lead role in Peter Eötvös' “Harakiri” at the Theater Plauen-Zwickau, and in 2024 she will sing the lead role of Ortenzia in the rediscovery production of Domenico Cimarosa's “Le trame deluse” and two opera premieres, “NOMORI II” by Wataru Mukai and “The Crocodile” by Simone Cardini.
In the field of contemporary music, she has already performed at “Acht Brücken,” the “Donaueschinger Musiktage,” the recital “B to C” organized by Tokyo Opera City, the “Suntory Summer Festival,” and the “Warsaw Autumn.” From 2026, she will be a permanent member of the SWR Vocal Ensemble. The soprano, who lives in Germany, is a promising artist, particularly in the field of contemporary music.
