Ruggiereo has given up his military career and has left his fiancée Bradamante to be with Alcina, a sorceress under whose spell he has fallen. They live their socially inacceptable love affair on Alcina’s island. But Bradamante, who plans to win back Ruggiereo, and Melisso, who needs Ruggiero to win the war, are both close on their heels.
