Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal created a frame-breaking and ambiguous fairy tale with their opera Die Frau ohne Schatten (Woman without a Shadow): Written during the First World War and directly influenced by the horrors of it, the work creates a world desperately in need of rescue with a composition that oscillates between popular theatre and the grand romantic opera. The ambiguous libretto is clothed in exuberant and colorful music. Strauss’ and Hofmannsthal’s version of the 20th century’s “Magic Flute” can now finally be experienced again at the Stuttgart opera house!
