The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra

by Benjamin Britten
In Benjamin Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra various musical instruments get introduced in an entertaining fashion. With an inexhaustible number of variations of one of Henry Purcell’s Baroque musical motives, the Staatsorchester Stuttgart presents the many differing musical colours an orchestral body possesses. Next to Camille Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the animals and Sergej Prokofjev‘s Peter and the Wolf, Britten’s composition is one of the most widely performed musical pieces for a young audience.
The Concert is presented by the Staatsorchester Stuttgart, the Landesjugendorchester Baden-Württemberg and the General Music Director Cornelius Meister – narrated by Ralph Caspers, well-known for the children’s TV shows Wissen macht Ah! and Die Sendung mit der Maus.
