ugly as fuck

A music theater research with music by Gustav Mahler, Chavela Vargas, ROSALÍA and others
A strange tennis court. Two women film each other whilst performing ancient, hypermodern beauty rituals. A trainer supervises. The clock is ticking...

Ugly as fuck explores the dark side of beauty where wellness becomes compulsion because the body must always be beautiful, young, fit and flawless. A search for liberation from the pretensions of a world full of fillers and filters begins. The performance attempts to open up spaces beyond the compulsion to fulfil expectations – and asks the question: what could reconciliation sound like with a body that is never perfect enough and with a gaze that is constantly measuring it?

"As we approach this subject, we find ourselves asking: What kind of space can create possibilities for breaking free from the labels and assumptions that marginalize us? There are ways of coming to terms with the ways our bodies are seen and perceived. But can we also free ourselves from that gaze? Perhaps music can help us find a way …"
