4. Chamber Music Concert
In the distance
Fazil Say Four Cities for Cello and Piano
Bohuslav Martinů Three Madrigals for Violin and Viola
Luciano Berio Folk Songs for Mezzo-Soprano and Seven Instruments
The Turkish composer Fazil Say dedicates each of the four movements of his Sonata for Cello and Piano to a different city in his homeland. While the first movement, Sivas, is inspired by a song by the poet Âşık Veysel, a Turkish wedding inspired his second movement, Hopa. Say portrays his hometown of Ankara with a somber atmosphere. The final movement, Bodrum, captures the liveliness of this tourist-filled town, where music from various bars mingles in the streets. The Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů, on the other hand, found his inspiration for the Three Madrigals in the Renaissance vocal form of the same name. In these duets, written in 1947 while in exile in the United States, Martinů’s longing for his homeland, the Czech Republic, is palpable. The Folk Songs, written by Luciano Berio as a tribute to his wife, the singer Cathy Berberian, transport listeners to various countries. In addition to the famous song “Black is the Color,” the cycle includes folk songs from Armenia, France, Italy, and Azerbaijan.
