Donizetti’s opera Lucia di Lammermoor is essentially about destruction, about the systematic destruction of a woman who, under the pressure of patriarchal violence, becomes caught up in destructive events. This is because she has the misfortune of being born into the wrong family, of loving the wrong man, and of having too little power to defend herself. At the centre of the story is Lucia, whose brother Enrico wants to secure the family's fortune and forces her to marry the wealthy Arturo Bucklaw. But Lucia loves Edgardo, her brother’s arch-enemy. When Enrico finds out about the two lovers, he sets a series of events in motion that culminate in violence and death: Lucia kills her newlywed husband and loses her mind. When Edgardo learns of Lucia’s death, he takes his own life.
