Writing as an Empowering Practice

Writing workshop for black people

Our thoughts and emotions can find expression through words and language. Both spoken and unspoken words are part of visible and invisible power structures. The act of writing can become a path to self-liberation, turning creativity and writing into empowering tools.

In this introductory course, participants will explore their own creativity with spoken word artist Lysania, while addressing questions such as: How does the unspoken affect our actions and perspectives? What themes do we carry within us, and which ones block us? And how can these blockages be released through a mindful writing process?

The workshop is open to Black individuals. A participation fee of €10 is required.

Artist: Bernice Lysania Ekoula Akouala
Bernice Lysania Ekoula Akouala (she/her), born in 1989 in Brazzaville, is a multidisciplinary artist, trained social pedagogue, and community organizer from Essen. For about six years, she has been performing her spoken word pieces under the name Lysania on various stages across the country. Her multifaceted work blends poetry, activism, BIPoC* empowerment, and theater. Lysania's texts captivate audiences while resonating with the spirit of our time. Her words are socially and racially critical, provocative, loud, and thoughtful, reflecting Black and (queer-)feminist resistance and the deconstruction of Eurocentric narratives and knowledge systems. This ethos also informs Lysania's approach to community work, aiming to both make the diversity of Black lived experiences visible and unify these realities through action and words.
