1. Symphony Concert

Works by Giya Kancheli, Mischa Tangian and Antonín Dvořák
Giya Kancheli Largo und Allegro
Mischa Tangian (Composer in Focus) The Order of Time for percussion and orchestra (world premiere)
Antonín Dvořák Slavonic Dances op. 46 and 72 (selection)

The encounter between different cultures is at the centre of the 1st symphony concert. Mischa Tangian composed the piece The Order of Time for percussion and orchestra especially for this concert, in which European and non-European musical cultures meet. The sound of the Staatsorchester Stuttgart is combined with the sound of non-European musical instruments, played by soloist Roshanak Rafani and members of the Babylon Orchestra. The world premiere will be accompanied by two pieces from different musical cultures. The concert will open with Giya Kancheli's Largo and Allegro from 1963 under the baton of New Zealand conductor Tianyi Lu. In his works, Kancheli combines influences from the vocal culture of his native Georgia with the Western avant-garde. Antonín Dvořák, on the other hand, created a musical monument to his native Bohemia with his Slavonic Dances. In addition to various Bohemian dances such as the rousing Furiant and the leisurely Sousedská, he also incorporated a Ukrainian song form, the so-called dumka, into the series.
