3. Symphony Concert

Works by Richard Wagner, Paul Hindemith and Anton Bruckner
Richard Wagner Siegfried-Idyll
Paul Hindemith Concert for clarinet and orchestra
Anton Bruckner Symphony No. 4 in E flat major

A few months after the birth of his son Siegfried, Richard Wagner composed the Siegfried-Idyll with which David Afkham and the Staatsorchester Stuttgart open this symphony concert. It was premiered as a birthday present for his wife Cosima in the stairwell of their villa in Tribschen. Wagner noted in the score: "Tribschen idyll with Fidi birdsong and orange sunrise." Anton Bruckner, eleven years his junior, was a great admirer of Wagner. His Fourth Symphony, which he gave the nickname "Romantic", was his long-awaited breakthrough. Shifting between dreamy passages and waves of dramatic intensification, it heads towards a radiant finale. Paul Hindemith's fascinating clarinet concerto can be heard between the two great Romantic composers. After his works were branded "degenerate music" and banned in Germany from 1936, Hindemith moved to the USA in 1940. In his concerto from 1947, which is dedicated to the American clarinettist Benny Goodman, Hindemith fully explores the tonal possibilities of the instrument - from virtuoso runs to lyrical cantilenas. The solo part in this concerto is played by Sharon Kam, one of the most sought-after clarinettists of our time, who won the Opus Klassik with her recording of Hindemith's Concerto 2022.
