Elektra witnesses her father being killed by his own wife. Elektra yearns for her brother Orest's return, hoping that he will avenge their father's death. But then she receives the news of Orest having been killed in an accident.
With Elektra, which premiered in 1909, Strauss was leading the avant-garde of his time.
