Hänsel und Gretel

by Engelbert Humperdinck
Opera in three acts
Libretto by Adelheid Wette based on the fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm

in german with german and english surtitles
“Ranisch’s productions have heart, wit, and imagination; they offer fun for children and food for thought for adults,” noted the Stuttgarter Nachrichten following the premiere of Axel Ranisch’s new production in 2022. This season, the most famous fairy-tale opera of all time is back on the opera stage. But what if the fairy-tale forest goes up in flames? And food becomes scarce? The Gingerbread Witch promises to solve the supply problem for everyone right away. Hansel and Gretel discover how the sweets she’s handing out are made: from highly dubious ingredients. But how the witch is defeated and how there’s hope despite all the gloom—you’re best off finding that out together with your children!
