Katja has married into the family of the widow Kabanova who dominates all members of the household including her son Tichon. Her love to another man creates a grave moral conflict for the deeply religious Katja with tragic consequences.
Janáček’s opera, which was first performed in 1921, is based on Alexander Ostrovsky’s drama The Storm.
