Tosca

by Giacomo Pucchini
Music drama in three acts
Libretto after Victorien Sardou by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica after Victorien Sardou

in Italian with English and German subtitles
Giacomo Puccini tells the „crime story" about the prima donna Tosca, her lover Cavaradossi, the republican painter, and Scarpia, royalist and head of the police department, with a stringency that is still gripping today. Passion and Terror have shaped the story that deals with the tension that arises between art and living as well as the destruction of illusions and self-denials when confronted with harsh reality. The opera which had its world premiere in 1900 is considered a masterpiece in the world of music theatre with its finely drawn characters and timeless melodies.
