Sergio Morabito was born in Frankfurt/Main. During his time as student of Applied Theatre Studies at Gießen University he already worked as assistant to directors and dramaturgs at Frankfurt Opera, for example on the famous production of Der Ring des Nibelungen with Michael Gielen, Ruth Berghaus, Axel Manthey and Klaus Zehelein. At Stuttgart Opera he worked together with Jossi Wieler on L’italiana in Algeri, Alcina, Poppea, Siegfried, Norma, Moses und Aron, La Juive and Katja Kabanova. Their Ariadne auf Naxos at the Salzburg Festival was awarded „Production of the Year“ in 2001. In San Francisco and Stuttgart they staged Doktor Faust, which was „Production of the Year“ in 2005. Their Stuttgart Alceste received the same award in 2006 und their Sonnambula in 2012. In 2005 Sergio Morabito directed a new staging of Norma with the ensemble of the Novaya Opera in Moscow. Debussy’s opera Pelléas et Mélisande, which originally premiered at Hannover State Opera, was invited to the Wiener Festwochen and to the Edinburgh International Festival as well as transferred to Stuttgart Opera. At Nederlandse Opera Amsterdam Wieler/Morabito directed Mozart‘s Lucio Silla and a Mozart/Da Ponte-Cycle. Their Salzburg production of Dvořáks Rusalka (2008) was transferred to ROH Covent Garden London in 2012. In 2002 and 2012 Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito were elected „Directorial Team of the Year“ and received the Deutsche Theaterpreis DER FAUST in 2006 (Doktor Faust) and in 2012 (Die glückliche Hand/Osud in the category of “Best Opera Staging”. Sergio Morabito has published numerous articles in opera publications and program brochures. He also taught in degree courses of Applied Theatre Studies at the universities of Frankfurt, Leipzig and Stuttgart and is a member of the German Academy of Performing Arts. In 2011 he published together with Jossi Wieler and the photo artist A.T. Schaefer the art book OPER. Since 2011/12 Sergio Morabito holds the position of chief dramaturg in the new team of managing directors of Stuttgart Opera. In the season 2012/13 Wieler and Morabito put to the stage L’Écume des Jours by Edison Denisov and Richard Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos.
