Hänsel und Gretel

by Engelbert Humperdinck
Opera in three acts
Libretto by Adelheid Wette based on the fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm

in german with german and english surtitles
"Ranisch's pictures have heart, brain, wit, imagination, they offer children a lot of colorful fun and adults some food for thought," reported the Stuttgarter Nachrichten after the premiere of Axel Ranisch's new production last season. The most famous fairy tale opera of all is now back on the Stuttgart opera stage. But what happens when the fairytale forest burns down? And food becomes scarce? The Witch promises to solve the supply problem for everyone right away. Hänsel and Gretel find out how the sweet stuff she distributes is made: from highly dubious ingredients. In the end, they defeat the witch, and for the whole family (despite all the gloom) there is a glimmer of hope. What it is? Find out - preferably together with children!
