Gion Antoni Derungs

Benjamin

Opera for all people aged 14 years and older

by Gion Antoni Derungs | text by Giovanni Netzer in Rhaeto-romanic, Latin, Italian and German with German supertitles
Benjamin is the youngest in Jakob’s clan. He is the silent observer of a family tragedy. His mother’s loss leads to brutal fights amongst his brothers, to isolation and the ensuing social rise of one family member in a foreign country. Envy, lust, struggle for survival, grief and a sense of not belonging anywhere are motives that all the characters are concerned with in their struggle with god and the community. The Joseph saga is part of both religious writings, the Old Testament and the Quran. It tells us about the historical meeting of nomadic tribes with Egypt’s highly developed culture.

By focusing solely on the human voice, the sounds of Gion Antoni Derungs’ a-cappella-opera give rise to spiritual intimacy and theatrical energy.
