Les enfants terribles (Children of the night)

by Philip Glass
A Dance opera for children aged 14 and older

Text by Susan Marschall and Philip Glass based on motives taken from Jean Cocteau’s novel of the same title
Everything starts with a snowball that hits Paul’s chest: When he falls in love, nothing in his and his sister’s world is ever the same again. Paul falls into his own isolated world, dominated by his sister Elisabeth, who represents to him playmate, alter ego, nurse and object of hate alike. Elisabeth constantly threatens Paul with the possibility of leaving him forever. Paul finds himself separated from a world outside that does not understand him, and the “game” becomes more and more menacing…
