Open House: Art, creativity, community

What is the JOiN – a temple of art or a community center? And what if we combine both ideas? Does that make the JOiN a place for everyone? Together with queer, activist, and BiPoC artists from Stuttgart and the surrounding area, JOiN opens its doors for a full-day celebration of art, creativity, community, and, of course, music. Come and join us at the "Construction Site of the Future"!

Advance registration via join@staatstheater-stuttgart.de is required for two of the formats:
- Audition for dancers for The Fairy-Queen
- BIPoC-Only Mini-Drag Workshop for beginners

All other formats are open and will be offered during the time slot mentioned below. You are welcome to join later or leave earlier as needed.

11 AM – 12 PM: Keynote by Prof. Dr. Natasha Kelly (in german)
In her keynote, Prof. Dr. Natasha A. Kelly will address the current situation for BIPoCs in German (cultural) institutions. Why do institutions struggle so much with diversity-oriented development and why are these processes moving so slowly nationwide? What barriers exist, and what should BIPoCs consider beforehand before stepping into an institution? What conditions must an institution meet to ensure fair, sustainable, and trust-based collaboration?

12:30–2:00 PM: Opera in Transition (in german)
This session takes a critical look at opera: Is its institutional structure still contemporary? How can it expand and diversify its audience by incorporating other arts, cultural sectors, and local communities? And what about the accusations that opera is a space that consciously excludes marginalized groups? These and other questions will be at the center of the discussion. Experts from various fields will engage in conversation and consult with the audience about the future of opera.
