Somewhere in the middle of nowhere, a writer (Javier Bardem) stuck in a creative crisis has moved into a country house that his younger wife (Jennifer Lawrence) is trying to fix with passion. But soon strange visitors appear who behave in the lovingly furnished idyll as if they were at home there and could use and soil everything as they please. When the writer overcomes his crisis and his wife is expecting a child from him, events accelerate and the house is overrun by hordes of uninvited guests who rob the woman of everything else. In his parable Mother! Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan and many more) presents a rather sombre view of history and the predatory nature of the human species. Beginning with Adam and Eve, we recognize ourselves in this masterpiece as the uninvited guests who, through the madness of permanent reproduction, are demanding all that planet earth has to give. Like Wotan and Erda in Wagner, the writer and his wife meet again and again in the eternity of time - with no possibility of breaking out of the cycle of die and become, where man turns deaf to the voice of nature.
