Saint François d’Assise

by Olivier Messiaen
Opera in three acts and eight pictures
Libretto from the composer
in French with English and German surtitles
Olivier Messiaen's scenes on Saint Francis of Assisi are not so much opera as oratorio, more precise: a ritual, for which Messiaen wrote one of 20th century’s most impressive and dazzling scores. The team around conductor Titus Engel and director Anna-Sophie Mahler will approach this monumental composition in a special way: The first and last act will be performed in the opera house, whilst for the part in between, the audience will join the orchestra, the choir and the soloists on a pilgrimage through the city of Stuttgart. Staged as an open-air performance both, in front of the opera house and on the open-air stage Killesberg, this work can be experienced in a completely new way: A pilgrimage with Messiaen to bring nature into the opera house. Will you join us?
