"Pantomime Madness" in Grobritannien!

Im heutigen Adventskalender-Türchen erzählt Clare Tunney, Mitglied des Internationalen Opernstudios, von ihrer liebsten Weihnachtstradition in Großbritannien.
A huge British Christmas Tradition is Pantomimes! Some of my fondest Christmas memories are from going to the "Little Theatre" in Middlesbrough to see a Pantomime with my family. "Panto" is a slapstick, comedy theatrical show that is performed in theatres and schools all over the UK around Christmas and New Year.

Traditional Pantomimes are based on fairy tales such as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Jack and the Bean stalk. It's assumed that the audience will already know these stories so they're often adapted, and have multiple fairytale/nursery rhyme characters in one show. The shows are full of sing-a-longs for the children, audience participation and a lot of innuendo for the parents!

My favourite part about Pantomimes are the "Pantomime Horse" and "Pantomime Dame"! A Panto Horse is made up of two people in an animal skin, one as the head and one as the ... rear. A Panto Dame is a very over the top character played by a man in Drag who often plays the "heros" mother. In the only Panto I was ever in, there wasn't enough men so I played "Widow Twankey", the Pantomime Dame ...

Pantomimes are performed everywhere, from the London Palladium, to your local amateur drama company, and depending on the theatre, the cast can be made up of British Celebrities! If you're ever in Britain over the festive period, go and witness the madness for yourself!
