Der Countdown bis Weihnachten läuft und die Vorfreude ist groß! Um die Wartezeit bis zum 24. zu verkürzen, gibt es hier täglich eine vorweihnachtliche Überraschung – präsentiert von aktuellen und ehemaligen Mitgliedern des Internationalen Opernstudios.

The text of "Kampana Ng Simbahan", which means "Church Bells", refers to the ringing of the church bells in the middle of the night in order to wake everyone up for Simbang Gabi (evening mass), which was a series of masses that occurred before Christmas. The mass would usually occur at around 4 am so that farmers could go and tend to their fields afterwards. Everyone is excitedly rushing to the church in order to receive blessings for the upcoming year. It brings me great joy to sing this piece as it reminds me of my family and my culture. The church is very important to Filipinos and it was a major part of my childhood.

Generell habe ich zu der Oper "Hänsel und Gretel" einen sehr persönlichen Bezug, da es die erste Oper war, die ich mit gerade mal 2 Jahren sehen durfte. Mein Papa hat das damals in Freiburg dirigiert; wenn er zu Hause geübt hat, war ich abwechselnd als Hänsel oder Gretel verkleidet und habe die ganze Oper mit ihm durchgesungen und -dirigiert. Die Musik dieser Oper hat so meine ganze Kindheit sehr geprägt und besonders der Abendsegen zählt bis heute zu meinen liebsten Opern-Momenten. Wohl auch deswegen, weil meine Eltern ihn für mich und meine Schwester früher als Schlaflied gesungen haben.

Cantarcillo (Toldrà) Alexandra Urquiola – Mezzosopran, Götz Payer – Klavier
Cantarcillo falls in a six-piece song cycle called Seis canciones castellanas written by the Spanish composer Eduard Toldrà. A majority of the pieces’ texts are taken from the 16th–17th century, Cantarcillo being one of two pieces in the cycle using the poetry of Lope de Vega. You may notice that the text is actually the original Spanish version of the text that Brahms set to music with a different musical perspective in Ida’s Geistliches Wiegenlied. I fell in love with Cantarcillo before discovering the other five pieces in the cycle. I love how the piano mimics the wind passing through the palms, rustling & disturbing the sleep of the baby Jesus. The piece is vulnerable, never going above a piano, as Mary tells the angels that she has no way of protecting Jesus any more than she already is, and that she just wants him to have peace. For me, this piece encapsulates kindness, gentleness, humility, and grace.

Mit den Zwei Gesängen von Johannes Brahms verbinde ich das perfekte Verschmelzen wunderschön warmer Klangfarben von Altstimme, Bratsche und Klavier, was nicht nur große Freude beim Zuhören bereitet, sondern gewiss auch jedes Kind im Geistlichen Wiegenlied in sanften Schlaf wiegen lässt.

"Peter Cornelius hat einen ganzen Zyklus an Weihnachts-Liedern geschrieben, den ich aber bis vor kurzem gar nicht gekannt habe. Ich bin sehr froh, im Rahmen dieses Projekts auf diese wunderbaren Lieder gestoßen zu sein und gerade das Lied "Die Hirten" hatte es mir von Anfang an angetan. Es hat mir große Freude gemacht, dieses eher unbekannte Lied für mich zu entdecken und zu singen."

"I think Catriona Smith was the first person to tell me about the song Maria durch ein Dornwald ging about a year and a half ago. I then found the Stefan Claas arrangement of the piece sung by Voces8 on YouTube and fell in love with it. A group of us from the opera house sang this arrangement for Hospiz Stuttgart in December 2019 and I am so happy to sing it again with Götz."

Als ich zwei, drei und vier Jahre alt war, sang ich das Lied Still, still, still voller Inbrunst rauf und runter. Ich kann mich noch genau und gut daran erinnern, wie ich dieses Lied zu jeder Gelegenheit immer und immer wieder vor mich her oder anderen vorsang. Auf sämtlichen Video-Kassetten dieser Zeit ist diese Still, still, still-Euphorie intensiv dokumentiert worden!

"Cantique de Noël, which is also known as O Holy Night, has always been one of my favourite Christmas carols. It actually was one of the first solo pieces I performed in public. It was for a Christmas pageant when I attended a Catholic elementary school. I never thought that I would be singing it again almost 20 years later as a professional opera singer, but life is funny like that. To this day, it brings back a lot of nostalgia for Christmas time with my family while growing up in Canada."
